Beach House Residence

A contemporary hillside residence emphasizing horizontality, ocean views, and seamless indoor–outdoor architectural integration.

Beach House Residence

Located in San Clemente, this coastal hillside residence is defined by clean geometry, layered volumes, and a strong visual connection to the Pacific horizon. The architecture emphasizes horizontality, with expansive glazing and articulated courtyards and patios that extend living spaces outward while framing ocean views.

The façade balances smooth stucco planes with warm wood and rough stone, creating depth through contrast and shadow. Interior spaces are organized along a central axis, allowing natural light to penetrate deep into the plan while maintaining clarity of circulation. Open-concept living areas transition seamlessly to patios, reinforcing an intentional indoor–outdoor dialogue suited to the coastal climate.

Landscape elements are structured to complement the architecture rather than compete with it. Thoughtful hardscape, low-profile planting, and defined outdoor rooms respond to the site’s topography while preserving view corridors. Material selections remain restrained and cohesive, highlighting craftsmanship and proportion over ornament.

We designed multiple outdoor areas in this project, including entry courtyards, rear patios and viewdecks. Some areas are optimized for view, while others maximize sun exposure and capitalize on natural shade — all intentionally flow seemlessly from indoor to outdoor and back.

What is really great about this home is it celebrates the traditional Spanish architecture from the exterior, but instantly and intentionally transitions to a stunning display or modernity on the inside. Studio Graham successfully illustrates how timeless, traditional style can co-exist and flourish alongside clean, modern lines and design.

The residence presents a composed architectural expression — contemporary in form yet grounded in its coastal setting — where scale, orientation, and materiality work together to create a balanced, enduring design.
